Description of this audio/visual presenation: Was Mary Baker Eddy in the days before and during the Civil War an abolitionist? Not just someone passively against slavery in theory but in fact a real activist abolitionist? That question will be explored in detail in a talk by Keith McNeil, citing research only made possible in recent years by advanced technology and the deep resources of the Mary Baker Eddy Library. It promises to be a fascinating discussion, and at the end you be the judge. Find out why biographer Sibyl Wilbur declared that it was on the issue of slavery (not religion) the Mrs. Eddy achieved her “Declaration of Independence” from her family.

Keith McNeil has researched the history of Mary Baker Eddy and Christian Science since the 1970s. His early interest in the history of the Christian Science movement evolved into a broadened search of the history of mental healing in America, including New Thought.

McNeil is the owner of major collections of documents, letters and memorabilia from historical figures in the movement and continues to add to his collection.

Keith McNeil is a lifelong Christian Scientist and graduate of Principia College in 1977.
